Leavenworth, Washington Woman Injured at Sea:
A 39 year old Mexican-American woman took a job as a fish processor to earn funds to help support her family. She never suspected that this job would cost her her health and ability to earn money. On July 12, 2001, as a result of vessel negligence and unseaworthiness, she was permanently disabled by a heavy metal shipboard exterior door which slammed on her leg due to a defective closer/damper. This crush injury to her right leg caused a permanent condition once known as reflex sympathetic dystrophy (“RSD”), now known as complex regional pain syndrome type 1 (“CRPS”). She has been plagued by constant pain for the past several years and will be hobbled for the rest of her life, despite implantation last month of a spinal cord stimulator which partially controls her pain. By working with Anderson, Connell & Carey she was able to obtain a fair recovery from the defendants.
