San Francisco County Maritime Lawyers

San Francisco is the commercial, cultural, and financial center of Northern California. The city is often known for its unique architecture and hills, cool summers, and many iconic locations including San Francisco Bay and the Golden Gate Bridge. Located at the north end of the San Francisco Peninsula, which separates San Francisco Bay from the Pacific Ocean, San Francisco has a population just over 870,000 according to the United States Census Bureau and is one of the most densely settled large cities in California. It is the second in the United States. San Francisco is also both a city and a county.

The Bay Area is home to vast maritime commerce. The Port of Oakland alone is the fifth busiest container port in the United States and handles 99% of all containerized goods in Northern California. The Port of San Francisco is comprised of over 550 ground, commercial, retail, office, industrial and maritime industrial leases, including landmarks such as Fisherman’s Wharf and AT&T Park.

It is not uncommon throughout California for residents to work in the maritime industry. Crewmembers and other workers who spend at least 30% of their time working aboard a U.S. vessel in navigable waters and who qualify for seaman are provided a means of compensation for injuries sustained while on the job under the Jones Act and general Maritime Law.

Unfortunately, maritime workers often have a higher risk of sustaining injuries on the job. Many times incidents of injury occur as a result of circumstances out of a worker’s immediate control and cause them to become seriously injured.
